Periodontal disease is characterized by inflammation and destruction of the periodontal tissue, which includes the gingiva (gums) and the bone surrounding the teeth (alveolar bone), as a result of a bacterial infection in the mouth.

The first stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis, caused by bacteria on the tissue surrounding the teeth. In this stage your gums may appear puffy, red, may bleed easily and can result in bad breath.

If left untreated, bacteria may spread below the gumline leading to periodontal disease. In this stage, you may notice receding gums, bone loss and loose teeth.

At Ferguson Dental Associates we focus on diagnosis and prevention of gum disease. All of our patients are screened for signs and symptoms of gum disease during routine hygiene visits. If a diagnosis is made, we work with you to develop an individualized treatment plan.

Gingivitis is often treated with good oral hygiene and regular cleanings with our hygienists. For some patients, cleanings more frequent than twice a year may be recommended to promote healing and optimal oral health.

More severe periodontal conditions can also be treated with success, but may require more extensive treatment. Treatment often begins with scaling and root planing, which is a deep cleaning of the tooth and root surfaces below the gums. This cleaning can be completed with local anesthesia to maximize patient comfort.

Additional treatment options may include oral medication or medication placed directly under the gums along with surgical treatment.
