We’ve embraced Tele-dentistry -- Here’s Why

IMG_0103

The Covid-19 pandemic poses a significant challenge to our patient-centered dental practice. At Ferguson Dental, we have always valued the time we get to spend meeting with new patients to introduce our practice and with our current patients to address their unique dental concerns and goals.

That’s where Tele-dentistry comes in. Virtual visits allow us to continue those free, one-on-one consultations with an easy-to-use, secure and HIPPA-compliant digital platform. Click on a link sent to you in a text and you’ll be connected with Dr. Ferguson or Dr. Cocchia - it's as simple as that.

There are significant advantages to these virtual conversations for both new and existing patients. For example, Dr. Ferguson was recently able to diagnose a concerned patient through discussion and visual examination during a tele-dentistry visit. At the conclusion of the visit, Dr. Ferguson provided helpful at-home treatment options and reassured the patient that their concern was non-urgent and not progressive - communicating that an immediate, in-office treatment was not required. “In other situations, it’s clear that an in-person treatment is necessary. For those patients, I can discuss the office safety protocols and plan for a streamlined productive visit, potentially reducing the number or duration of in-person visits,” explains Dr. Ferguson. “The goal is providing the best solution for each patient, tele-dentistry has become an important tool.”

During your complimentary tele-dentistry visit you can expect:

1. The full, uninterrupted attention of the dentist during the virtual visit.
With our split-staffing schedule, virtual visits are scheduled with the dentist who isn’t working clinical hours. You’ll be able to speak to the Dr. Ferguson or Dr. Cocchia free from the noise of multiple air-infiltration devices and the burden of multiple layers of PPE  -- both necessary elements of the post-covid-19 office environment we have created at Ferguson Dental.

2. A lower stress environment. Meeting from the comfort of your home, allows for a more relaxed, productive and enjoyable conversation -- this is particularly valuable for those patients who have dental anxiety or other significant concerns.

3. More efficient treatment planning and scheduling. Tele-dentistry allows the dentists to gather the information they need to plan for more targeted, in-person dental appointments, reducing the number of your visits and time spent in the office.

Dr. Ferguson and Dr. Cocchia genuinely enjoy the chance to meet their patients unhindered by PPE and other distractions of the clinical setting. The opportunity to discuss your dental concerns in a comfortable setting is something they both value and enjoy. We are confident it will be a pleasant and productive experience for you as well.

If you’re interested in scheduling a Tele-dentistry visit, call the office at 973-744-3181 or email: Frontdesk@fergusondental.com. We look forward to seeing you and speaking with you soon!

Reopening May 26th

Letter to our Patients

During our recent closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have remained available to treat patients in need of emergency dental procedures. We are pleased to announce that Ferguson Dental is scheduling routine hygiene and elective dental procedures, utilizing new safety protocols, beginning on May 26th, subject to NJ State and NJ Dental Board guidance.

As we embrace our new normal, we want to assure you that your health and safety remain our top priority. While our office has been closed for over two months, we have been hard at work creating the safest possible environment for you and our staff. We have made significant investments in technology and implemented extensive changes to our policies and procedures that go beyond the recommendations of the ADA and CDC. Listed below are a few of the changes that you can expect when visiting our office. Additional details will be posted on our website and specific instructions for your visit will be provided in your appointment confirmation email.

We encourage you to schedule your restorative and routine oral care as your dental health is an important element of your overall well-being. We anticipate that the demand for dental hygiene appointments will exceed the limited appointments available in our modified schedule. If you had a visit cancelled in the past few months, we will be reaching out to you individually. Please be patient as we work hard to meet everyone’s specific needs. You can also request an appointment online or calling us at 973-744-3181.

We’ve missed you and are excited to return to doing what we love most - providing our patients with the best dental care available. The entire staff is committed to providing exceptional care in a safe but still friendly and comfortable environment. We are all looking forward to seeing you soon!

The Team at Ferguson Dental

What is a dental emergency?

If you are wondering if your dental concern is worth calling the office about, the short answer is YES. We encourage you to communicate early with Dr. Ferguson or Dr. Cocchia who will be able to help you determine if your concern requires a visit to the office or emergency dental treatment. Ferguson Dental has also embraced teledentistry technology which allows for a virtual visit with a doctor to diagnose dental concerns remotely. The process is easy and we are able to text you a link to a secure virtual environment.

When it is necessary to schedule an appointment, Ferguson Dental has made significant investments to facilitate emergency dental treatment in a safe environment utilizing appropriate PPE and advanced air filtration along with additional safety procedures and policies. Our safety protocols include, but are not limited to, express check-in from your car, health screening prior to entering the office, limited contact with office staff or other patients, sterilized instruments and a clean, sanitized environment, and virtual, express check-out. Please note, these additional precautions will also be implemented when we are able to schedule routine and elective dental appointments.

The ADA and NJ State Dental board has issued guidelines for dental treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. We will continue to follow those guidelines for the safety of our patients, staff and community. The information below is a summary of the current ADA guidelines for treating dental emergencies.

Dental concerns are rarely severe or life threatening. Situations that are a true health emergency require immediate treatment in an hospital emergency room. These include:
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Severe infection and swelling that make it difficult to breath or swallow
  • Trauma involving facial bones that compromise the ability to breath
Urgent dental care focuses on the management of conditions that require attention to relieve pain and/or risk of infection and to alleviate the burden on hospital emergency departments. These dental concerns should be treated as minimally invasively as possible. Emergency dental treatment is available at Ferguson Dental Associates. Please contact us if you are experiencing any of the following:
  • Dental Pain
  • Wisdom tooth pain and/or gum infection
  • Dry sockets
  • Abscess, or localized bacterial infection resulting in localized pain and swelling
  • Tooth fracture resulting in pain or causing soft tissue trauma
  • Dental trauma resulting in a loose or knocked out tooth
  • Broken crown or bridge
  • Abnormal tissue or lesion in the mouth requiring an evaluation or biopsy

Other urgent emergency dental procedures:
  • Extensive dental caries or defective restorations causing pain
  • Suture removal
  • Denture adjustments or repairs when function is impeded, related to pain, or medical conditions
  • Root canal treatment for patients experiencing pain
  • Snipping or adjustment of an orthodontic wire or appliances creating pain or discomfort
  • Dental treatment that is required prior to critical medical procedures

We are not currently treating routine or non-urgent dental procedures. These include but are not limited to:
  • Initial or periodic oral examinations and recall visits, including routine radiographs
  • Routine dental cleaning and preventive therapies
  • Orthodontic procedures other than those to address acute issues (e.g. pain, infection, trauma) or other issues critically necessary to prevent harm to the patient
  • Extraction of asymptomatic teeth
  • Restorative dentistry including treatment of asymptomatic cavities
  • Aesthetic dental procedures

We Are Still Here For You!

  • Dr. Ferguson and Dr. Cocchia continue to see emergency patients on an as needed basis. Contact information for the dentist on call is available by calling our office phone number at 973-744-3181. Please do not hesitate to call if you have dental pain or an urgent concern.
  • Our office continues to be closed for all elective and routine hygiene procedures.
  • Appointments during the week of 3/30- 4/4 have been cancelled and patients have received a call.
  • We will reschedule all cancelled appointments as soon as we have a plan in place to reopen.
  • We continue to monitor the recommendations of the CDC and ADA along with the NJ State government and dental board. Our goal is to identify and implement all safeguards and procedures to provide for the optimal safety of our patients, staff and community.

The entire staff at Ferguson Dental genuinely loves their jobs and appreciates the opportunity to provide the best dental care to our patients. We also love staying connected with our community - our patients are like family to us and it is extremely tough to not be open!

We also fully realize that we are not alone. The COVID-19 pandemic is deeply affecting everyone in our community in multiple, devastating ways including social, economic, and most importantly individual and family health. We are committed to doing what we can to support our patients, staff, and community as we navigate the crisis together.

In support of that goal we have:
  • Donated our excess N-95 masks to an emergency room in desperate need.
  • Inventoried our remaining PPE supplies and are providing that information to the NJ state authority in charge of collecting and distributing supplies to facilities in need.
  • Continued to support community organizations as individuals and as a business to help as much as possible during a challenging time.
  • Stayed connected as a team, supporting each other with information and friendship.

Much of the news we hear as a community is negative or painful. We are trying to share positive news among our team where we can. This week we have the following good news to share:
  • Geri’s son Patrick was named the #1 Tight End in NJ and was also ranked #11 in the USA!
  • Our dental assistant Jami, a huge animal lover, has been staying positive by playing tic-tac-toe with 2 of her cats. Her cat Nitti routinely wins!
  • Dr. David has never taken more than a week’s vacation in his professional life and for our chatty dentist, social distancing is a challenge. He is grateful to have all three of his adult children at home, Lucy and Jack are working remotely and Tillie is finishing her freshman year at Swarthmore online.
  • Our new hygienist Frankie captured the beautiful picture above. Spring is coming, beauty is still around.

At this point, we don’t know when we will be able to fully reopen, but again, we are available to treat emergencies. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have dental pain or a dental problem that can’t wait.

Stay in touch, stay safe and stay well!
