Questions About Dental Insurance

AdobeStock_327291310
Ferguson Dental Associates operates as a fee for service practice.  We have chosen this model because we strongly believe that it allows us to provide the optimal dental care to our patients, care that we would not be able to provide given the limitations and policies of current dental insurance programs.  As a result we do not "participate" in any given dental plan.

We do, however, work in partnership with our patients and dental insurance companies to maximize your health benefits and facilitate reimbursement for our patients.  At each office visit we are happy to assist you in this process by providing completed insurance forms and mailing them to your insurance company for you at the conclusion of your visit.

Additional Dental Insurances Facts

1. Dental Insurance is fundamentally different from medical insurance.

2. Dental Insurance is a contractual agreement between the employer and insurance company. The percentage of reimbursement varies greatly dependent upon the premiums paid for a particular plan and the limitations of the agreement.

3. Maximum payable benefits typically are around $1000-$1500 per year. This maximum benefit of most dental insurance plans today is almost identical to the annual maximum benefit of dental insurance plans 40 years ago.

4. Dental insurance is a benefit designed to help defray the costs of quality dental care, but is not all-inclusive of what an individual may need or desire to obtain optimal dental health for a lifetime.

5. While individual plans and companies vary greatly, our patients often receive similar reimbursement using their out of network benefits at Ferguson Dental as they would at an in network dentist. It is important to learn and understand your unique plan and benefits.

Summer Update - Your Health and Safety Remain Our Top Priority

Outside waiting room
Our Outside Waiting Room

It is hard to believe that a full year has passed since our office reopened for routine hygiene and elective dental procedures.
Our fully vaccinated staff is excited to enter the summer of 2021 with an ongoing commitment to providing exceptional dental care in a safe environment!

The investments we have made to our technology and safety protocols have been successful in keeping our office and staff free from COVID-19 infection or transmission throughout the pandemic, and these safety measures will continue as our patients’ health and safety remain our top priority. As the recommendations of the CDC and NJ Dental Board continue to evolve, we have made ongoing changes to our protocols which are listed on
our website.

Please note the following protocols and minor changes to our schedule beginning in June.

  • Please continue to complete the online health update and screening forms prior to your appointment.
  • Express Check-in will continue.
    • Please call when you arrive at the office. Staff will greet you at the front door (Gordonhurst Avenue entrance) and escort you directly to your treatment room.
    • Please note that we now have an outside waiting room with several adirondack chairs for use prior to your visit or during your family member’s visit.
    • Patients will exit from the parking lot door.
  • Please continue to wear masks in all common areas of the office. Although the entire staff is fully vaccinated, we do treat children under 12 and immunocompromised adult patients who remain vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus. We appreciate your support in maintaining a safe indoor environment for all patients.
  • Multilevel clinical and disinfection safety protocols that exceed standard dental universal precautions will continue along with appropriate PPE for all staff.
  • Limited Contact and No-Touch Policies including virtual checkout, e-statements and remote credit card payment will continue. Our staff is always available to assist you in the checkout process.
  • Teledentistry Virtual Visits for consultations, new patient interviews and evaluation of dental concerns will continue.
    • These visits are complementary and are a good option for patients who would like to discuss their concerns before coming to the office.
    • Teledentistry visits are scheduled and conducted remotely with Dr. Ferguson or Dr. Cocchia, both of whom genuinely enjoy speaking with patients without the distraction of PPE and air filtration noise.
  • The office will be open on Monday (8-5), Tuesday (8-8), Wednesday (8-6), Thursday (8-8), Friday (8-2), and on 2 to 3 Saturdays per month (8-2).

During the last year of the COVID-19 pandemic, our staff has enjoyed remaining connected - interacting with and seeing patients on a regular basis, and our office has continued to be extremely busy. Because your dental health is an important element of your overall well-being, we encourage you to contact us early to schedule your restorative and routine oral care. Although the demand for dental hygiene appointments is high, we will make every effort to schedule you as soon as possible. As always, we are available to see emergency patients as needed. You can
request an appointment online or by calling us at 973-744-3181.

We are all looking forward to a healthy and joyful year as our community returns to a more normal environment. We hope to see you soon!

We’ve embraced Tele-dentistry -- Here’s Why

IMG_0103

The Covid-19 pandemic poses a significant challenge to our patient-centered dental practice. At Ferguson Dental, we have always valued the time we get to spend meeting with new patients to introduce our practice and with our current patients to address their unique dental concerns and goals.

That’s where Tele-dentistry comes in. Virtual visits allow us to continue those free, one-on-one consultations with an easy-to-use, secure and HIPPA-compliant digital platform. Click on a link sent to you in a text and you’ll be connected with Dr. Ferguson or Dr. Cocchia - it's as simple as that.

There are significant advantages to these virtual conversations for both new and existing patients. For example, Dr. Ferguson was recently able to diagnose a concerned patient through discussion and visual examination during a tele-dentistry visit. At the conclusion of the visit, Dr. Ferguson provided helpful at-home treatment options and reassured the patient that their concern was non-urgent and not progressive - communicating that an immediate, in-office treatment was not required. “In other situations, it’s clear that an in-person treatment is necessary. For those patients, I can discuss the office safety protocols and plan for a streamlined productive visit, potentially reducing the number or duration of in-person visits,” explains Dr. Ferguson. “The goal is providing the best solution for each patient, tele-dentistry has become an important tool.”

During your complimentary tele-dentistry visit you can expect:

1. The full, uninterrupted attention of the dentist during the virtual visit.
With our split-staffing schedule, virtual visits are scheduled with the dentist who isn’t working clinical hours. You’ll be able to speak to the Dr. Ferguson or Dr. Cocchia free from the noise of multiple air-infiltration devices and the burden of multiple layers of PPE  -- both necessary elements of the post-covid-19 office environment we have created at Ferguson Dental.

2. A lower stress environment. Meeting from the comfort of your home, allows for a more relaxed, productive and enjoyable conversation -- this is particularly valuable for those patients who have dental anxiety or other significant concerns.

3. More efficient treatment planning and scheduling. Tele-dentistry allows the dentists to gather the information they need to plan for more targeted, in-person dental appointments, reducing the number of your visits and time spent in the office.

Dr. Ferguson and Dr. Cocchia genuinely enjoy the chance to meet their patients unhindered by PPE and other distractions of the clinical setting. The opportunity to discuss your dental concerns in a comfortable setting is something they both value and enjoy. We are confident it will be a pleasant and productive experience for you as well.

If you’re interested in scheduling a Tele-dentistry visit, call the office at 973-744-3181 or email: Frontdesk@fergusondental.com. We look forward to seeing you and speaking with you soon!

Reopening May 26th

Letter to our Patients

During our recent closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have remained available to treat patients in need of emergency dental procedures. We are pleased to announce that Ferguson Dental is scheduling routine hygiene and elective dental procedures, utilizing new safety protocols, beginning on May 26th, subject to NJ State and NJ Dental Board guidance.

As we embrace our new normal, we want to assure you that your health and safety remain our top priority. While our office has been closed for over two months, we have been hard at work creating the safest possible environment for you and our staff. We have made significant investments in technology and implemented extensive changes to our policies and procedures that go beyond the recommendations of the ADA and CDC. Listed below are a few of the changes that you can expect when visiting our office. Additional details will be posted on our website and specific instructions for your visit will be provided in your appointment confirmation email.

We encourage you to schedule your restorative and routine oral care as your dental health is an important element of your overall well-being. We anticipate that the demand for dental hygiene appointments will exceed the limited appointments available in our modified schedule. If you had a visit cancelled in the past few months, we will be reaching out to you individually. Please be patient as we work hard to meet everyone’s specific needs. You can also request an appointment online or calling us at 973-744-3181.

We’ve missed you and are excited to return to doing what we love most - providing our patients with the best dental care available. The entire staff is committed to providing exceptional care in a safe but still friendly and comfortable environment. We are all looking forward to seeing you soon!

The Team at Ferguson Dental

What is a dental emergency?

If you are wondering if your dental concern is worth calling the office about, the short answer is YES. We encourage you to communicate early with Dr. Ferguson or Dr. Cocchia who will be able to help you determine if your concern requires a visit to the office or emergency dental treatment. Ferguson Dental has also embraced teledentistry technology which allows for a virtual visit with a doctor to diagnose dental concerns remotely. The process is easy and we are able to text you a link to a secure virtual environment.

When it is necessary to schedule an appointment, Ferguson Dental has made significant investments to facilitate emergency dental treatment in a safe environment utilizing appropriate PPE and advanced air filtration along with additional safety procedures and policies. Our safety protocols include, but are not limited to, express check-in from your car, health screening prior to entering the office, limited contact with office staff or other patients, sterilized instruments and a clean, sanitized environment, and virtual, express check-out. Please note, these additional precautions will also be implemented when we are able to schedule routine and elective dental appointments.

The ADA and NJ State Dental board has issued guidelines for dental treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. We will continue to follow those guidelines for the safety of our patients, staff and community. The information below is a summary of the current ADA guidelines for treating dental emergencies.

Dental concerns are rarely severe or life threatening. Situations that are a true health emergency require immediate treatment in an hospital emergency room. These include:
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Severe infection and swelling that make it difficult to breath or swallow
  • Trauma involving facial bones that compromise the ability to breath
Urgent dental care focuses on the management of conditions that require attention to relieve pain and/or risk of infection and to alleviate the burden on hospital emergency departments. These dental concerns should be treated as minimally invasively as possible. Emergency dental treatment is available at Ferguson Dental Associates. Please contact us if you are experiencing any of the following:
  • Dental Pain
  • Wisdom tooth pain and/or gum infection
  • Dry sockets
  • Abscess, or localized bacterial infection resulting in localized pain and swelling
  • Tooth fracture resulting in pain or causing soft tissue trauma
  • Dental trauma resulting in a loose or knocked out tooth
  • Broken crown or bridge
  • Abnormal tissue or lesion in the mouth requiring an evaluation or biopsy

Other urgent emergency dental procedures:
  • Extensive dental caries or defective restorations causing pain
  • Suture removal
  • Denture adjustments or repairs when function is impeded, related to pain, or medical conditions
  • Root canal treatment for patients experiencing pain
  • Snipping or adjustment of an orthodontic wire or appliances creating pain or discomfort
  • Dental treatment that is required prior to critical medical procedures

We are not currently treating routine or non-urgent dental procedures. These include but are not limited to:
  • Initial or periodic oral examinations and recall visits, including routine radiographs
  • Routine dental cleaning and preventive therapies
  • Orthodontic procedures other than those to address acute issues (e.g. pain, infection, trauma) or other issues critically necessary to prevent harm to the patient
  • Extraction of asymptomatic teeth
  • Restorative dentistry including treatment of asymptomatic cavities
  • Aesthetic dental procedures

We Are Still Here For You!

IMG_8115

  • Dr. Ferguson and Dr. Cocchia continue to see emergency patients on an as needed basis. Contact information for the dentist on call is available by calling our office phone number at 973-744-3181. Please do not hesitate to call if you have dental pain or an urgent concern.
  • Our office continues to be closed for all elective and routine hygiene procedures.
  • Appointments during the week of 3/30- 4/4 have been cancelled and patients have received a call.
  • We will reschedule all cancelled appointments as soon as we have a plan in place to reopen.
  • We continue to monitor the recommendations of the CDC and ADA along with the NJ State government and dental board. Our goal is to identify and implement all safeguards and procedures to provide for the optimal safety of our patients, staff and community.

The entire staff at Ferguson Dental genuinely loves their jobs and appreciates the opportunity to provide the best dental care to our patients. We also love staying connected with our community - our patients are like family to us and it is extremely tough to not be open!

We also fully realize that we are not alone. The COVID-19 pandemic is deeply affecting everyone in our community in multiple, devastating ways including social, economic, and most importantly individual and family health. We are committed to doing what we can to support our patients, staff, and community as we navigate the crisis together.

In support of that goal we have:
  • Donated our excess N-95 masks to an emergency room in desperate need.
  • Inventoried our remaining PPE supplies and are providing that information to the NJ state authority in charge of collecting and distributing supplies to facilities in need.
  • Continued to support community organizations as individuals and as a business to help as much as possible during a challenging time.
  • Stayed connected as a team, supporting each other with information and friendship.

Much of the news we hear as a community is negative or painful. We are trying to share positive news among our team where we can. This week we have the following good news to share:
  • Geri’s son Patrick was named the #1 Tight End in NJ and was also ranked #11 in the USA!
  • Our dental assistant Jami, a huge animal lover, has been staying positive by playing tic-tac-toe with 2 of her cats. Her cat Nitti routinely wins!
  • Dr. David has never taken more than a week’s vacation in his professional life and for our chatty dentist, social distancing is a challenge. He is grateful to have all three of his adult children at home, Lucy and Jack are working remotely and Tillie is finishing her freshman year at Swarthmore online.
  • Our new hygienist Frankie captured the beautiful picture above. Spring is coming, beauty is still around.

At this point, we don’t know when we will be able to fully reopen, but again, we are available to treat emergencies. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have dental pain or a dental problem that can’t wait.

Stay in touch, stay safe and stay well!

The Staff of Ferguson Dental

A Comfortable and Successful Implant Experience at Ferguson Dental

Dental implants are often the best, most conservative, and long-lasting method to replace natural teeth. Dr. Ferguson and his team have successfully placed thousands of implants for more than 18 years in a variety of treatment plans. In our Montclair office, our patients are able to complete a full spectrum of treatment options in a single, comfortable environment. Technology is only a tool, but Ferguson Dental has invested in the best tools available to facilitate an optimal implant experience for our patients.

On-site is a Trios 3D color scanner that replaces traditional impressions, a 3D cone beam catscan X-ray machine required for successful implant planning and restoration, and a 3D printer that creates exact implant placement guides. Following successful implant placement and healing, we create beautiful, natural looking single tooth, multiple teeth, partial and full dentures to attach to the implants in partnership with exceptional local and national labs along with using our on-site CEREC technology.

From the initial planning stages to decades after placement, Ferguson Dental is committed to your healthy smile and successful implant experience. After your implant restoration is complete, we ensure the best long term success by making sure that your implants are well cared for and maintained by our skilled hygienists and through routine follow-ups.

Understanding Oral Cancer

IMG_1293

Protect Yourself Against Oral Cancer - Knowledge is Power

The mouth, tongue, gums, throat, and lips are sensitive tissues that often develop lesions or sores. In most situations, these sores are not cause for concern and quickly heal. However, Oral Cancer is a genuine concern that can occur among patients of any age or gender. Being aware of the signs and risk factors, as well as scheduling routine hygiene visits on a regular basis, can assist in early diagnosis.

Understanding Oral Cancer

  • Oral cancer is divided into two categories.
    • Lesions occurring in the mouth including your lips, cheeks, teeth, gums, tongue, and the floor and roof of your mouth
    • Lesions occurring in the throat, tonsils and base of the tongue.
  • Early detection may result in better treatment outcomes.
    • Oral cancer is fatal for approximately 10,000 people each year.
    • The 5-year survival rate of those diagnosed is approximately 60 percent.

Risks for Oral Cancer

Age, gender, and certain lifestyle habits can place you at increased risk for oral cancer, but it is important to remember that it can, and does, occur in men and women of all ages. Patients age 40 and older make up 95% of all oral cancer cases, with men having a higher incident than women. Patients age 18-39 who use tobacco, smokeless tobacco, are heavy drinkers, are exposed to toxins, or may have a previously diagnosed oral HPV infection are also at an increased risk.

Warning Signs and Symptoms

If you experience any of the symptoms below, let us know, especially if you’ve had them for two weeks or more. Also, keep in mind that aside from an obviously sore throat, the below symptoms can present themselves in the absence of pain. Look out for changes that can be detected on the lips, inside the cheeks, palate, and gum tissue surrounding your teeth and tongue.

  • Reddish or whitish patches in the mouth
  • A sore that fails to heal and bleeds easily
  • A lump or thickening on the skin lining the inside of the mouth
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, moving your tongue or in the way your teeth fit together when closing your mouth.
  • A persistent sore throat, feeling like something is caught in their throat, numbness, hoarseness or a change in voice.

Reducing Risk

Regular visits to the dentist increase the likelihood of early cancer detection. Currently, just over half of all those diagnosed with oral cancer survive more than five years – a statistic driven in part by late diagnosis. If you are considered “high risk,” (see list above) you should be receiving an oral exam at least every six months, if not more frequently.

  • During a comprehensive dental exam, we will check your oral cavity. This includes your lips, cheek lining, gums, the front part of your tongue, the floor of your mouth and the roof of your mouth. We also examine your throat at the soft part at the roof of your mouth, including your tonsils, the back section of your tongue and where your tongue attaches to the bottom of your mouth. Your jaw will be examined for any lumps or abnormalities.

  • If we identify a suspicious lesion, it is important to stay calm and remember that most sores and lesions in the mouth are benign. Depending on what we see, we may ask you to return to the office a week or two later to see if questionable spots are healing on their own, recommend a biopsy be taken, or refer you for additional testing. Working together we develop the best strategy for diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

Healthy Habits That May Help Reduce Your Risk

  • Avoid all tobacco products
  • Avoid or reduce your consumption of alcohol
  • Consume more fruits and vegetables
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure that can result in cancer of the lip (using lip balm with an SPF of at least 30 can be helpful)
  • Avoid exposure to environmental hazards (wood dust, formaldehyde, printing chemicals)
  • Conduct a self-exam monthly so you can catch any of the symptoms listed above. Use a small hand-held mirror so you can see the back of your mouth and tongue. Our hygienists are happy to provide instructions on this sort of home exam.
  • Consider coffee. While the jury is still out, some research suggests coffee may help protect the mouth from oral cancer.

Oral cancer is serious business. Yet, the prognosis is improved when caught early. At Ferguson Dental, our patient’s health is our top concern, and oral cancer screening is included in all comprehensive dental exams. This quick and painless screening seeks to identify abnormal changes in the mouth, and is the often your earliest line of defense in the detection of oral cancer. If we need to reexamine a suspicious lesion, that follow-up is always offered free of charge. Remember that no list is exhaustive, and to always share with each of your health care providers your concerns and strategies regarding your oral health. We understand that every patient has unique questions, please always feel free to talk with us at your visit or contact us at 973-744-3181.

Too Much Toothpaste?

Flouride has beneficial effects on the development of strong and healthy teeth, but you can overdo it - causing some mild enamel discoloration. We recommend the use of training toothpaste (fluoride free) for children under 3 and its use should be continued until a child can reliably demonstrate spitting out all toothpaste after brushing. It is also a good idea to monitor toothbrushing until a child is at least 6 years old and beyond if necessary. It is important to note that NJ water is not fluoridated. As a consequence, we do recommend a controlled and healthy dose of fluoride be administered through age appropriate vitamins throughout childhood. At Ferguson Dental, healthy dental habits are reviewed and encouraged at every dental hygiene visit, and we are always available to answer your individual questions and concerns!
